This project is under design for a retirement-age couple who are downsizing from a significantly larger home in the area. They desired a compact three-bedroom residence reflecting an updated interpretation of traditional, regional cottage designs.
Additional Project Information
Sited on an elevated portion of the wooded property atop natural rock outcroppings, the house is connected via a glazed pergola to a freestanding two-car garage. The pergola element provides a covered walkway between the garage and the home’s lower-level entry.
Primary living areas are lifted above driveway level and flow onto a large covered porch. Living, dining and kitchen zones are organized in a long south-facing band with the porch roof providing shading in summer months. A stone-clad fireplace anchors the living room and an adjacent reading area. All cabinetry in the kitchen is arranged below counter-height. The dining area is flanked by a long storage wall, designed to organize pantry dry goods, kitchen accessories, table settings and a walk-in wine cellar. The north side of the first-floor level contains a bedroom suite, laundry room and access to the rear yard.
A light-filled stair links all three levels of the home. The lower level contains recreation, storage and utility spaces. Two bedrooms suites, an exercise room and a small office area with outdoor covered balcony complete the second-floor level program.
