The clients for this project own a company specializing in bespoke metal, glass and wood fabrication. Their work can be found in signature residential and commercial projects nationwide. For their own residence, they required a simple and thoroughly modern design featuring both their company’s manufacturing capabilities and their personal aesthetic and functional design preferences.
Additional Project Information
The home is entered through a two-story foyer linking the front and rear of the property. To one side of the foyer is a large open room containing the principle living area, dining and kitchen. On the opposite side of the foyer is a three-story gallery space surrounding a sculptural stair suspended from the roof above. The master suite is accessed from the stair gallery and lifted several steps above the foyer level for privacy. Additional entertaining spaces and family zones are situated respectively at the basement level and third floor.
Construction of this home reused portions of a prior structure’s foundation in order to minimize site disturbance. A structural steel frame was utilized to create an open floor plan while oversized push-out windows and lift-and-slide glass doors maximize views and outdoor connections. The deep overhanging roof and high-performance glazed systems effectively address the site’s predominant southwest solar exposure.
The exterior cladding consists of a terra cotta rainscreen system, combined with stone veneer and blackened stainless steel accents. Interior materials were selected to reinforce a warm and modern atmosphere and include wood ceilings, stone veneered walls and a combination of wood flooring and large porcelain ceramic floor panels installed over a radiant heated slab.
Patrick was responsible for the overall project design and he collaborated with the owner to create a series of individual design elements including the central stair, exposed steel framing and exterior window and door systems. This project represented another in a long series of successful project collaborations between Patrick and the owner.
